steps before starting a job.

I do some side work and does anyone have some steps they perform before they get down to the work.
for example i back up the reg.
if the machine is crital then i off load the data for safe keeping.
I install only one thing at a time
make only one change at a time etc

figured some one had a list or something better i could use.
