Stop apps stealing focus

Hi

Can anyone tell me how I can stop an application from stealing the focus from another app? For example: on my machine an email checker starts every hour. When it starts it ‘takes over’, stealing the focus from whichever application I am using at that time.

My machine runs Windows 98 SE.
