STOP: error after upgrading to SP4

By rickp ·
I have a P3 800 on a DFI CA61b motherboard with 512mb sdram, 2 20gig wd ide drives, an Adaptec 1520b/1522b ISA adapter with an stt80000 tape drive.I am running Windows 2000 Server w/10 clients. Software supplier requested an update to SP4. I run sp4 and reboot and get a STOP: 0x0000007B error. I removed the SCSI controller and the cdrom and checked for virus. Don't know what else to check.

Could be a corrupt boot sector. Did you change to dynamic disks by any chance?

The most common causes I've seen with this are:

Changing the motherboard of the system.

Corrupted video drivers.

Boot up the system with a boot disk and run a chkdsk c: /f.

Have you tried with other RAM? Can you boot into safemode? If yes, have a look at the logs. If you can get into safemode, you should also be able to remove SP4 (If you told it to safe your system during installation) if nothing else helps.

Here's a link to a Microsoft KB article about how to troubleshoot this error that might be of help:
