Stop error during Win2k installation

By paulg70ar ·
I'm receiving this stop error during text-mode portion of Win2k installation: STOP: 0x0000006B (0xC0000034, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED. From what I gather, this apparently points to a hardware problem of some sort. I'm using a P4 1.3G, Intel D850GB system board, 128MB RAM, IBM DTLA-307030 HDD, latest Intel BIOS. I've stripped the system down to just system board and hdd, tried different BIOS settings (what few there are), clean install, upgrade install. The stop screen appears after text mode displays "starting windows 2000", delay of a few seconds, hdd led lights, then stop screen. I'm at my wits end and can't afford to pull out any more hair. Any help is appreciated.

Stop error during Win2k installation

I doubt that it is something to do with your hardware. But first... has it copied all of the files to your computer? If so try running it in safe mode when it goes in for its first boot. if you try safe mode and it still crashes then it is most probably a hardware error, if it doesn't crash then it is probably a windows bug (one of the few!) If you go to the microsoft webpage and go to the tech support page there and quote the error code i am pretty sure they will have a good idea what it means. You could always try going into do before the first boot and editing autoexec.bat and config.sys so it only runs the bare minimum cut out all excess options and put them back in later! I have had a few probs with win98 and its installlation so i just played with my startup files until i found a winning combo. Hope this has helped!

Microsoft support had little to offer on this error other than acknowledging it exists and a few suggestions which I've tried(latest bios). Nothing on this error from Intel support either. It's doubtful any tricks used for Win98 would work in getting Windows 2000 to install, since they're 2 totally different animals.

The error message is just too familiar. Yes you are quite right and this strongly suggest that you have a hardware problem. I recommend you check the memory (RAM). We have installed so many WIN2K OS on a previously WIN98 machine and surprisingly, on some machine, especially those that occupied more than one memory-slot have this problem. I am not sure if the error message is generic, but we have the RAM replaced and it solved our problems.

I have to strongly agree with the previous answer, which is to try swapping out your RAM. I have encountered this exact problem while building both laptops and workstations, and each time the cause was bad RAM. During you install attempt, did you get any file copy errors? If so, that is a classic sign of faulty RAM. Hope this helps.

Stop error during Win2k installation

I ran into the same problem with an intel P4. I thought that I was having a hardrive failure or that the harddrive was too slow to load the files correctly. I even got the same error code. I had two sticks of 128 RAM installed. One was from PNY, the other from Circuit City. I cannot remember the brand name. I removed the Circuit City trash, cleaned up the original harddrive and the install went flawless. It shocked me when WIN2K did not ask for any specific drivers for video, sound or moden. It set everything up perfect. I was taught a valuable lesson, namebrand may cost more at the start, but actually cost less when the time spent to figure out problems is factored in.

Paul.
