I’m not sure exactly how to stop them, but Computer Associates’ InoculateIT will heuristically scan the attachments to insure that they do not carry a virus payload. It will also alert you if it cannot clean them.

Microsoft is about to release a security update for their Outlook Clients. But, be prepared to lose some functionality.

Lose the ability to directly open many attachments such as executable programs and .vbs scripts (and internet URLs). This isto force the scanning of unknown programs and avoid the current rash of e-mail viruses and trojan programs that tie into Outlook for functionality or that can bypass a virus scanner if opened inside of Outlook.

Instructions for installation will vary; if you use Outlook 98, it is easy to install. If you use Outlook 2000, you must first install Office Service Release 1a (SR1a), which involves having the original Office 2000 CDs available to do the SR1a install. Then the patch can be installed.

TrendMicro offers a product, ScanMail, for Exchange server. They have a content filter plug-in (eManager) that allows you to filter out all e-mail that contains the specified attachment type. I am sure you would be satisfied with the results.
