Stopping services over the network

By kevin07 ·
I am using Backup Exec Adv. Server Edition (Vers. 8.5) installed on a NT 4 Server. I want to start and stop services over the network on another NT 4 Server in order to do proper backups. Backup Exec allows for a .exe or .bat file to be run beforeand after a backup job. I could use a .bat file with the NET START and a .bat file with the NET STOP commands to start and stop services respectively, but only on the server the .bat file is installed. How can the .bat file do this over the network? I was told that you can possibly do this with a util in the Windows 2000 Resource kit. If this is true, can anyone explain?

Stopping Services Remotely

by sgnormo In reply to Stopping services over th ...

Using NT 4 resource kit u can use the netsvc.exe to stop services remotely. but i found that it is not always reliable. Now by using vbscript and wbem (must install on server that service is to be stopped)i found it far more reliable and stable.

i have written some vbscripts that stop services and start services.

note: if you have win2k systems then this is all part of the os (the wbem part) so u don't need to install this piece from microsoft.
