stopping services remotely

By W2K mcse ·
Does anyone know if there is a command line utility to stop a service on a server remotely? I am working on a project with the programming team and they need to stop and start a service on a server but it will be done remotely from a workstation. Wecan't run it from the GUI so that is not an option, has to be a command line utility. I looked at NET STOP but it only seems to work on the machine you are on.

Thank You for any help.

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pstools.shtml

this will give you some tools for the job. the only true solution is from the windows resource kit. there is has a remote console program. you can log on to the server is a command shelland execute commands as if you are local. so then your net stop command will work. the remote console program is not free from microsoft and you need to have rights to run this tool.

the pstools are free but it does not allow you the connect tothe command prompt instaed you have to use psexec.exe \\server net start XXX
with both tools you can have total control over the services and command executed on the server.

Thanks but the other two suggestions NETSVC and SC.exe are a little easier. Have a great weekend.

Have you tried the Resource Kit's SC.EXE (ServiceControl)?

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/reskit/win2000/

SC \\server stop ServiceName

Got it. Thanks very much. I wish there was a way to split the answer as the BeerMonster's answer worked also. You got it in first so you win. Thanks for your help.

There's a reskit util for just this purpose, it's called netsvc. BTW, I thought my name was silly, but yours takes the biscuit : )

In the Win2K Resource Kit there is SERVICE.VBS, which can stop and start services on a remote machine. The syntax would be this:
cscript Service.vbs /X /N snmp /S MACHINENAME

CSCRIPT is the Windows Scripting Host program that runs .VBS files.
