Strange clicking sound by external hard disk?

By zizojubay ·
My external hard drive, Western Digital, is making a strange sound whenever I plug it to the computer. It goes like "click, click, click" and then it stops. It sounds like it tries to boot up but it couldn't. The drive doesn't show up in my computer but shows up in device manager. Is there any way that I can get my files back? Thank you.

You might give this a try

Remove the hard drive from the case, and plug it into the Coolmax adapter:

Connect the Coolmax USB cable. The drive will be assigned a drive letter in Explorer. If the drive is working, you might be able to transfer your files.

While connected to the Coolmax adapter, you can run a diagnostic package on the suspect drive:

Good luck - things aren't looking very good.

Nothing to lose

Try anything that's already been suggested as you've got nothing to lose. If you have another drive of the same model you could try swapping the controller PCB. Failing that, if you should suddenly gain access to you data then make sure you transfer it to another drive as quickly as possible. Good luck.

That clicking sound is more than likely your hard drive...

going down the tubes fast. Dismantling a failing external drive for the sole purpose of inserting it into another external enclosure is not likely to be a good idea. Try the 'freezer' thing. If it works, get those files off of there fast.
