Strange Networking Question on WIN ME

By briancwk ·
My laptop has Windows ME installed. It cannot obtain IP from the DHCP server. If I assign an IP by myself, then I can ping and even browse the others PCs (with windows 95/98 installed) but I cannot ping the servers (Windows 2000 installed). I think that is why it cannot obtain IP from the DHCP server.

Is the NIC problem or WIN ME / Windows 2000 problem?

Strange Networking Question on WIN ME

Since you can ping & browse when you set the IP address yourself, you've eliminated the NIC as your problem. Check to make sure you've selected the automatic assignment of the IP address.

Right click on Network Neighborhood - Highlight "TCP/IP" -
Select "Properties" -
"Obtain an IP address automatically" should be checked on.

Hope this helps,

Maxwell

The NIC is not the problem. Check to make sure your laptop is set to logon to an NT domain if you are supposed to. Since you said the servers were Windows 2000, then they use Active Directory and use domains so I would bet this is where the problem is. Check with the below.

Right click Network Places and choose Properties. Click the Client for Microsoft Networks and click properties. Make sure there is a check for logon to domain and the appropriate name is there.

The above is off me head as I don?t use ME but it should be close enough.

Once you are setup for the proper domain you should receive the IP from DHCP. Check it with winipcfg.

Good luck,
Steve

I presume you have DNS installed on the servers and maybe WINS. On the ME client in TCP/IP properties make sure on the DNS tab you have the IP address of the server and on the WINS tab (if you have WINS on the server) make sure again that you have the IP address of the server. I believe it is a problem that it can't find the name of the server thus doesn't obtain an IP address automatically. Also if that still doesn't work, edit the hosts file on the ME client and add the IP address of the server and the name of the server in that followed by #PRE.
Hope this helps
