Strange printer problem

By jgray ·
I am at wits end on this one.
I am trying to install a lexmark optra N printer. The printer is connected via TCP, and I have a WinNT 4.0 server hosting it. I recently upgraded the printer driver on the server. All my clients can access it except for 4 clients. When they try to print to it, a dialog box pops up saying "Cannot start print job". So if I go to the printer properties of the Lexmark a dialog comes up an says "Device settings cannot be displayed. The driver for the specified printeris not installed, only spooler properties will be displayed. Do you want to install the driver no." If I choose Yes it will go through the process of installing it, and during install it will ask to print a test page and it prints a test page fine. After I finish installation then go back to the printer properties it will say the "Device settings cannot be displayed..." again. I have edited the registry and removed every key and value related to Lexmark, removed every lexmark driver file, but still no luck.
Has anyone had this before.

Thanks
Jeff

Are these four computers on a different subnet than your NT server, or the TCP/IP printer? If they are, start looking there. Place these machines on the same subnet if you can, and check your routing tables if you cannot - you may have to enable IP forwarding on the printer's NT Server. Did you create the print queue via JetDirect?

Good luck.

It really sounds like a driver problem, or perhaps an NT software problem. I would check with Lexmark Tech Support. Be sure you have the latest driver. Restart the spooler service. Be sure disk space for spooling is sufficient. Call Lexmark.
