Strange problem - maybe virus - "help" pages open uncontrollably

By souk47 ·
I am suddenly having a strange problem on my laptop, which is running Windows Vista.

In almost every program I open, help pages pop open on their own, independently, and refuse to close.

This is happening in Microsoft Outlook, Windows Vista, Adobe Acrobat reader, MS Word...

I can't do a google search for viruses that impact help pages because there are millions of hits for virus assistance that include the word "help."

Virus and malware scans turn up nothing.

This coincided with an odd problem with Chrome. Uncontrollable explosion of new tabs that can only be stopped by holding down Ctrl-W repeatedly. I subsequently uninstalled Chrome.

I would appreciate any insights.

Thanks.

F1 Key?

Is there gunk, crumbs, or anything nasty about your F1 Function key? Is it sticky or flaky?

F1 is ususally "help" in many programs, so that may be what's requesting the help screens.

You could try going into safe mode

press F8 as your computer is booting, then go highlight safe mode and boot that way.

Then, after Windows loads, run MalwareBytes (download and save to a jump drive from a working computer if needed, then install from your jumpdrive to infected computer).

If it's clean, run a rootkit scanner (preferably HitmanPro), it could be a rootkit.

Note: To run HitmanPro, you'll need to be in the SafeMode with Networking environment, which can be accessed the same way as choosing SafeMode.
