MSH Microsoft's new command shell, code named Monad

by stefan.stranger In reply to Stranger's BLOG

MSH is Microsoft's new command shell, code named Monad. I heard about it on TechEd 2005 and just now found some time to look into it. I enrolled in the beta and I'm now waiting for the email from the beta team.

Good starting point for info on Monad is on Channel9. If I've more info on the subject I'll come back to it.

This post originally appeared on an external website

Managing Non-Microsoft devices with Jalasoft XIAN Network Manager for MOM 2005

by stefan.stranger In reply to Stranger's BLOG

I've been testing Jalasoft XIAN Network Manager for MOM 2005 for monitoring Cisco Switches and Routers the couple of weeks now. And I must say, it does what it promises and more, monitoring of Cisco switches and routers and more non-Microsoft devices. But I only tested the monitoring of Cisco switches, so if I've more info on other devices I'll let you know.

The support I got when installing the XIAN Network Manager and Smart Management Packs was great.Thank you Arnold Hagens ;-) One of the switches I wanted to monitor wasn't in there database and I got a patch in couple of days.

Here are some of the features of their Xian Network Manager:

Monitoring of Cisco Routers , Cisco Switches, Cisco VPN Concentrators, Cisco PIX Firewalls, F5 BigIP, APC UPS , HP Procurve Switches and Linux Servers.

State, topology, Computer views.

Collection of performance data.

Reporting on monitored devices.

The XIAN Network Manager uses the MOM Connector Framework to send it's data to MOM 2005. For a compleet overview of the architecture see their website. Their XIAN Network Manager for MOM 2005 Workgroup Edition (Beta) does not use the MOM Connector Framework, because that's not in that MOM version ;-) But also without the MCF Jalasoft can get the non-microsoft devices monitored in MOM 2005 Workgroup Edition with their beta version of the XIAN Network Manager for MOM 2005 Workgroup Edition.

For configuring how to monitor the devices Jalasoft uses the XIAN Console, where you can add the devices you want to monitor and which rules you want to implement on every device you are monitoring.

The whole installation of the XIAN Network Manager was not that complicated, but think before starting the installation where you want to place the different components. Do you want to place everything on one machine or do you want to place the XIAN database on the same SQL server as where your MOM and/or SystemCenterReporting databases are?

The only thing I was missing during the installation was a pre-requistes check before installing the XIAN Network Manager. These are by my mind the pre-requisites for the XIAN Network Manager:

Microsoft Message Queing Services must be installed

MOM Connector Framework must be installed

XIAN Service Account must have:

Administrator privileges

Log on as a service" privileges on the "Local Security Settings"

If the Xian Connector component is being installed, then an account with privileges in the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 scope must be provided.

One last tip: Because the XIAN Network manager uses SNMP to monitor the devices you can use GetIF for troubleshooting SNMP issues. GetIf is much more than an SNMP browser however, with the ability to graph OID values over time, display the device's interface information, routing and ARP tables, as well as do basic port scans, Traceroutes, NSLookups, and IP Scans.
