Stripe set in win 2000 server

Two Questions regarding stripes sets

If you use 3 hard drives to create a stripe set and each hard drive is 20 GB per hard drive, then is your stripe set volume size 20 GB or 60 GB?

Also, do the hard drives, in a stripe set, have to be the same size or can they be different sizes?

Tom's Hardware has a fantastic primer on Raid Arrays and Stripe Sets (Raid-0). Here's the URL:

http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/00q1/000329/fastrak66-01.html

(delete any spaces)

In a nutshell, the volume size in your example is 60gb and you *should* use same sized drives (otherwise you'll waste space).

firstly what is your requirement. is u want to create a spanned volume orstripped volume or creating a mirror volume or raid5 volume.

when ever u are trying for stripe set with parity(raid5)fault tolerence will be there, then the hard disk spacelost is 30%.

as per ur setup ur having 3 20 gb hdd's so u can set 10 gb partition in each hdd for raid5 so total of 30 gb will be avialable for raid5 remaining 10 gb for os. in your raid5 setup u can use 20 gb only remaingin for fault tolenrence.

usually we use this for data base, to hold the data.

i hope this will help u.
