Stubborn XP firewalls...

By CTOS ·
I was helping a client try to get their brand new Dell with XP home to allow the MSN Messenger through the firewall. But try as I may, I had to leave without succeeding! Has anyone had this problem and have any hints what I missed?
I did the "safe zone" settings, the firewall permission for the messenger, etc etc.
I have not had this much difficulty before! Is it possible that the Messenger program is faulty?

Are you using the 7.0 beta?

I've seen this problem before. I've removed Windows Messenger, installed msnmsngr before and after sp2, added to trusted programs, opened ports.... there have been occasions where I couldn't get the stupid thing working no matter what I tried.

Use the text logging to see if MSN communication is actually being dropped at the firewall. Their network has been up and down lately, so it may not be on your end.

Yes, I was using the older version that comes with the XP systems these days for messenger. I updated to the newer version and it is working fine. Thanks for you input!
