Student access to the fonts folder

By neil.neidt ·
I am working in a school district as a graphics design teacher. Our previous network administrator who has left us had a way to give individual users the permissions needed to add fonts to the fonts folder. With our denied access, we get the "font in use message" when trying to add fonts. I need information to give to our new administrator so that we can open up rights to just the fonts folder for students. We do need network securty, just no this much!

Thanks for any help you can offer!.

Group Policy restriction

by LarryD4 In reply to Student access to the fon ...

Within Group Policy for the schools network it sounds like the prior admin put policies in place to not allow users to access the control panel or specific icons in the control panel. This feature is available under Group Policy on the user side.

If that is not the way he did it and that feature is not enabled then he probably set secuirty preferences on font folder itself.

Leaving the new SysAdmin to do their job.

I doubt if you'll be called upon to 'teach' the new jobholder how to do the job.

Put in an official request to allow the access, with justification for doing so.

It is not a good idea to start telling the admin how to do their job unless they ASK for your assistance. You ARE, after all, only an instructor....... ;\

Help was asked for !

by neil.neidt In reply to Agreed

The district cut a very competent administrator due to financial contraints and replaced him with a teacher's aid who knows a little about Microsoft network administration. She asked for help in finding an answer to the font loading problem that came about because we installed a new lab. I guess I should have been more specific when asking for help to this problem to avoid the snipers.

More information is always a good thing

by jdclyde In reply to Help was asked for !

And I am sure that if you step back for a minute, based upon the information given, would YOU like it if you get hired in for a job and right away, people who are not even related to your job are telling you how to do it? If you are honest with yourself, you will say "no". You would be insulted, and rightly so.

It is a shame that the people running your district are so incompetent. They saved a few bucks in wages, and how much have they lost in lost productivity?

Why don't

you just get the new administrator to add the fonts to the workstations. It is only a lab and it shouldn't take too long. They will have access to them when they are installed. Students shouldn't be able to install anything that job is for the Administrator.
