would it be better to have a program to check and fix my computer's efficiency & an antivirus or a program to do it all ?
if so which free program's are best for the job ?

Too many variables to give a good reply...

depends on Windows version, peripherals, installed software. For the most part, Windows XP SP3 and later have decent enough built-in utilities, and there are several good free antivirus/antimalware tools...Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira Free, Avast Free, and MalwareBytes. I do make one recommendation...avoid "registry cleaners and optimizers"...these can do more harm than good and have not been proven to increase performance to any measurable degree.
