    stumped on ISP connection

    Locked

    by jgallihe ·

I am running Win 98. Whenever I connect to my ISP my browser opens up one page and then even though my dialup connection is still hooked up, whenever I try to access another page, I get page not found messages. This happens no matter what browser Iuse, IE, netscape, Opera. I have deinstalled and resinstalled dial up networking. I have run modem diagnostics. I have deleted my windows partition, reformatted the partition, and reinstalled windows with the same results. If I make a connection and don’t bring up the browser, I can do pings and tracerts, etc. After I bring up the browser if I try and do a ping, I get nothing but timeouts. I have a Citrix dial-up connection to work and I am able to use this fine. I don’t think my modem is the problem. I had reinstalled and deinstalled the OS serveral times now with the same result. I am at a loss as to what my problem could be. I have went through tech support with my ISP company and went through their diagnostics procedures to no avail. Their recommendation after all of their troubleshooting was to reload the Os which I have done serveral times to no avail. I am ready to bag this machine.

You did not mention what version of the browser you were using
Delete the cache and temp files
      clear the history
Check the encryption setting on your browser, some will not display page if not 128 bit encryption security setting and download the updates which may help

      Hi,

It sounds like port 80 is blocked.

Is it a standard image you’re installing from or a custom one? Perhaps from work. If you use Citrix at work, its possible that your image has port 80 blocked so that browsing can only occur through the Citrix server.

If a standard install… then try another ISP!

      Cheers,
      Tim.

I agree, you probably have port 80 blocked, or even though you did not mention the versions of your browsers, you could be using an old ones. Try to upgrade them. Good-lack.
