Stupid internet connection problems AGAIN, Plz help and THANKS TR!

So I have had (i think) the same problems on two different routers now. I actually thought that one was broken (Lan wise) and bought a new one. It is now happening on my new router also. So I have a belkin router (cheapie model) with a comcast cable modem as the internet source. When I connect to the modem wirelessly using my XP desktop everything works fine. I have an older computer with slower USB ports, and for data transfer sake I actually like to use the wired LAN. However when I plug into the very same router via Lan and my VIA RHINE ethernet adapter port (tested and confirmed working) I cannot get a correct IP address from the same router. I have disabled the wireless, reset the winsock, and restarted the computer multiple times, however I cannot get the correct IP from my router LAN wise. I always get limited connectivity. I can manually enter the same info from the wireless connection (IP, gateway, DNS and soforth) and I can get an instant connection that says it is working fully (not limited connectivity error) however under those settings My internet doesn't work, XP just thinks that my connection to my router is a complete one. I have everything on auto find usually and it works perrfectly with wireless but will not work with the LAN. What am I missing? What do you have to do when switching from wireless to wired. This happened once before and I don't quite remember how I figured it out. I know its pretty simple (I think).....THANKS A TON in advance. BTW, this is the connection via wireless and said router. Which is obv, working fine.

I haven't tested anything today persay, however I had used all the equiptment successfully before, about 2 weeks ago this problem started happening. I forgot why, but I wanted to make sure my old usb wireless adapter was still working so i plugged it in and tried it. Worked great, all that happened is that made what had been a working Lan connection no longer a working one. I think this May have been resolved before when I uninstalled my wireless adapter. Something which Id actually rather not do again. Do u think that would be it tho, just having a (Zydas) usb wireless adapter installed (not enabled since I disable any connection I dont use) would cause this. I have a connection but Im picky and would like to figure this one out. Thanks one more time TR and the first replier (short term memory not so good, I appologize).

I have an update. To not be incredibly lazy I decided to fire up my laptop. It also is running win XP pro with the exact same security software and settings on said software and such. After disabling the built in wireless, I plugged in what had not worked at all on my desktop and VOILA. Instant success. So I know the router, cable, and everything is fine, (99.9 percent sure my desktop NIC is fine also). What could be the issue here with this picky desktop?

sounds like you have the same problem as me... unfortunately...

I am not sure what it is caused by, but i think it may be the Winsock catalog screwing up.

A few ideas for your consideration

Check the signal strength by hovering the mouse over the wireless network icon in the system tray. If the signal strength is low, that is the most likely reason.

Wi-Fi is short range 2.4GHz radio, essentially worthless beyond 150 feet from the access point. Here are some tips that may help reduce dropped connections:

1) A vertical booster antenna for the router can enhance horizontal coverage by ~50%

2) If the router is located one floor up or down from the laptop, consider relocating the router to the same floor

3) If the wireless adapters are 802.11g, program the router to broadcast only in G mode

4) Enable SSID broadcast in your router setup

5) WPA encryption is more squirrely than WEP, but WEP is less secure

6) How important is encryption for you? If there are no likely snoopers within 150 feet, consider disabling encryption. With encryption disabled, connection is faster, data transmission faster, and there are fewer dropped connections

7) If you disable encryption, it would be wise to enable the MAC address filter in the router setup. Enter the MAC addresses of the wireless adapters, and the native MAC network card addresses of any desktop computers

If you disable encryption and enable MAC address filtration, periodically check for intruders. With Linksys, open the router setup, and navigate:

Status > Local Network > DHCP Client Table

The only MAC addresses posted on that table should be your own equipment. Any other MAC address is an intruder, and you can banish that person by adding that MAC address to the naughty list:

Wireless > Wireless MAC Filter > Prevent PCs listed below from accessing the wireless network

9) check for 2.4GHz radiofrequency interference near the laptops (cordless telephone base stations)

10) check for RF interference (fans, motors, hard drives, etc.)

11) check for shielding (metal cabinets, etc)

12) If still no connection, try disabling the proprietary driver and enabling the Windows wireless chip driver.

13) Configure the router to automatically obtain IP address from DHCP.

14) Look for a strong signal (>50% signal strength) from a channel close to the router's assigned channel. There should be 5 channels between such signals to avoid interference due to bandwidth issues. For example, if you see a strong signal broadcast on channel 6, program the router to broadcast on channel 1 or channel 11.

15) Check your laptop power management. Is there a timeout for the wireless adapter? If so, configure your power management so that the wireless LAN is always enabled and powered.

16) Disable the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) service: Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Wireless Zero Configuration .

17) Be sure the desktop Ethernet cable plugs in to the router. Double check the router port, because the 1st port on some routers is dedicated to a special function (and I'm not quite clear about why this is so).

1 You may have to do some acrobatics to get everything stable once properly configured. This is the sequence that has worked for me:

18a) Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the cable modem
18b) Boot the modem
18c) Boot the router
18d) Reconnect the router-modem Ethernet cable

That about exhausts my suggestions. When I have posted these suggestions in the past, TR members have jumped all over me regarding disabling encryption. You may legitimately need encryption, but be aware that there is a penalty to pay for the complexities of this technology.

Again, if there are no likely snoopers within range of your access point, and you utilize MAC address filtration, and you are not overly concerned about the sensitivity of the wirelessly transmitted communication, your wireless connection will be more predictably successful by disabling encryption.

So by some means I have stumbled upon a cure yet again, as I am using my ethernet connection as we speak. Thanks for your help Rick, but the wireless was fine, it was the ethernet that had not been working. I ended up re installing the driver for my on board NIC, and I am not sure if I had a bad driver or not. However that somewhat cleared it up, and since I had also read some crazy article on how ASUS on board NICs have to be reset by unplugging the computer for 10 seconds. Everytime I had switched settings or tried something else, I immediately rebooted with no time sitting turned off. I don't know if its the driver or the weird ASUS bios thingy that had caused my prob, but I am giong to try to reinstall that old driver I was using to find out why I had this happen.

I don't have a fraction of your networking knowledge, so I depend upon image backups to restore functionality when bad stuff happens that System Restore cannot repair.

Ghost will write a 10GB image backup to a firewire external HD in about 6 minutes. Ghost will overwrite a corrupted HD at 1-2GB/min.

If your glitch is truly a software problem, I would image a known good configuration and archive it for safekeeping. Sometimes it's less important to understand what went wrong than to quickly restore a working configuration...

If you're being serious about the "fraction of your knowledge" then thanks a lot Rick . I am about 99 percent self taught and like to try out new stuff, because I end up going through problems like this one. I agree that in most cases it is much more important to fix it fast than figure out why, but as I aspire to own my own comprehensive computer business one day I like to gain as much knowledge as I can so that if I ever encounter these problems I'll know what to do.

Thanks for that suggestion about Norton Ghost btw. I love good tools that I can use to fix problems and Im delving into the "image" backup stuff as we speak.

Think it was a driver

I had used driver magician a few weeks ago to update a few of my drivers. I actually gained some usefulness since I went from having only usb 1.1 to usb 2.0. I think I also installed the network card driver that the program suggested. After a little tinkering I found out that the driver they were suggesting was wrong for my setup. I am nearly positive when I reinstalled the asus recommneded driver from their site that my problem went away.
