Human-Based Workflows and Project Management Software

by msteffen In reply to Submissions from an emplo ...

Workflows exist in some form at every company, in every industry. Traditionally, the term has been used to describe transactional processes. Credit card information, for example, is submitted on a website. The information is then sent to banks for approval and to a billing system for invoicing, which results in a message being sent to the shipping system for delivery. These types of transaction workflows, primarily relaying data between systems based on a static set of rules, require very little human intervention. They are typically automated using business process management (BPM) software or custom coded applications.

Human-based workflows on the other hand are usually manually managed and tracked. Meetings, phone calls, paper trails, spreadsheets, emails and desktop applications are typically utilized by business professionals as a means to keep the flow of information orderly. In most cases, a lack of efficiency is unavoidable. Using many different tools and methods to track workflows simultaneously leads to chaos. Visibility of a project?s status, and more importantly, what is causing its hindrance becomes increasingly ambiguous.

Many human-based business workflows involve intellectual property or process innovations that give companies an edge over competitors. In a small vertical industry successfully managing workflows can make or break a company. Because of the diversity of workflows and the ways in which they are managed, it is difficult to find off-the-shelf project management software that is flexible enough to adapt to any company?s set of unique workflows and management style. For this reason, many companies feel trapped, worried that the only option is to develop a custom solution. Developing custom project management software, however, is a costly and lengthy process.

Only Interneer Intellect solves this problem, through catering to the human-based business workflow market. It enables the business user to capture workflows using simple drag-and-drop capabilities. It also incorporates many features that automate and streamline the business process: it is web-based, facilitating real-time collaboration; automatically creates databases; automates workflows; and allows easy reporting, document management and project tracking with multi-user support.

As project management technology evolves, the benefits of automating workflows to gain efficiency, visibility and cut costs becomes increasingly apparent. With the advent of tools like Interneer Intellect this can be accomplished rapidly, easily and inexpensively.

Is Excel Running Your Business? Transition to Project Management Software.

by msteffen In reply to Submissions from an emplo ...

Businesses small and large have been using MS Excel for years to run processes and manage projects. For small, simple projects Excel is a useful organizational tool. However, projects have a tendency to grow in complexity at a rate that Excel can not keep up with. </o>

Imagine that a business needs to track projects or processes and does not have the time or budget to put a sophisticated tracking system in place. An IT department does not exist or is busy handling other affairs. Excel often seems to be the obvious, quickest and easiest resource to get things started.

Skip ahead a few months or a year later and those same Excel spreadsheets have now become a burden to the company. Many different versions are being passed around. No one knows who has the most up-to-date files saved on their computer. The project has evolved, making the spreadsheets so complex that only one person understands how to update them or even interpret them, in some cases. </o>

It is now nearly impossible to generate reports from the spreadsheets or track progress and historical data. The data is also not searchable since Excel does not function as a database. The list goes on and on with all the limitations.

It is very understandable why business professionals turn to Excel to run critical processes: most already own a license on their desktop and are familiar with enough to quickly get the project started. They can even bypass IT altogether and maintain the Excel files themselves. The problem is Excel was never intended to be used as project management tool. It is no surprise that collaborating via spreadsheets becomes unbearable rather quickly as projects and processes grow in complexity.

Project Management software solutions such as Interneer Intellect provide business professionals with the same benefits they seek with Excel - ease of use, quick setup, ease of maintenance without IT - all with the full benefits and robustness of a database system, that is collaborative, web-based, multi-user and enterprise level. These systems even incorporated many other features that make it easier for the business users to manage documents, projects and process workflows.

Excel is best for what it was designed to do - accounting and financial calculations. Stop running your businesses on a thread and read white papers and view demos of project management software system. Web-based systems like Interneer Intellect allow for real-time collaboration between team members anywhere. The time saved using project management software will provide ROI.

Why it is Important to Empower End Users in Project Management Software

by msteffen In reply to Submissions from an emplo ...

Choosing The Right Business Path</o>

Technology advances at such a rapid rate that with each passing day it seems to only go faster. Business professionals strive to choose the best tools to efficiently manage and execute projects. With technology moving so fast, there is no time to go down the wrong path. Once on a familiar path, one can continue with confidence. The biggest fear is starting off on the wrong path. There is a simple guideline for determining the correct path and it is this ? empowering the end user. End users are their own experts, so the more ability you give them to control their tools the more they will feel comfortable with any given product.</o>

The Current Situation</o>

We live in a time of technology when access to tools has exceeded political boundaries. The Internet and the World Wide Web are part of a user-driven force that is affecting everything in society. Entertainment has become decentralized. We can download songs, which means we do not have to go to the concerts; we can download a movie, which means we do not have to go to the theater. We are in fact becoming a world of Do It Yourselfers who expect user-driven tools. The last thing we want is for our tools to drive us.</o>

Technology is always somewhere between the center point and the perimeter. End users towards the perimeter have greater control over their tools and the systems they use, whereas end users towards the center have little or no input. They must follow the dictates of the tool?s designer.</o>

Some History</o>

In the past, when you wanted to place a call you gave the operator the number and the call was put through for you. Today we dial directly. We still purchase newspapers and read what the editor laid out for us. But now we can go to Digg.com and see what the readers think should be on the front page. Technology seems to be moving us away from the center and out towards the perimeter. Kodak built a business on developing film, whereas the digital camera allows us as many shots as we want followed by all the manipulation of the image cared for.</o>

Design For The Perimeter</o>

By its nature, technology is moving away from the center towards the perimeter. End users are empowered to not only do more things, but to have those things feed back into the system and affect end results. The success of a new piece of technology or business is based on a wide number of factors, but empowering your users rather than trying to overpower them truly provides the best foundation. </o>

Interneer Intellect: Project Management Software that Empowers the End User.</o>

In the realm of project management software, systems such as Interneer Intellect are built on this concept. Interneer Intellect allows the administrative user to actually design the templates and workflows that project executers see. The entire project management process is guided and designed by the project managers themselves, without hard coding. This is a major breakthrough for project management software. </o>

Most systems trap the end user into attempting to execute unique and often complicated projects with the limited functionality of pre-designed templates. If the business then wants to change the program to reflect the types of projects they run the system must be programmed, costing unnecessary amounts of time and money. </o>

With Project Management Software Projects and Processes go Hand in Hand.

by msteffen In reply to Submissions from an emplo ...

Project management software is too often designed lacking one key element; a means for managing the processes that lead to a project?s success. Some software developers have come to recognize this problem, resulting in a shift from the development of project management software to what is now considered its own unique entity - project and process management software. The creation of a new sub-category of project management software with a very similar name has inevitably led to some confusion among business professionals. How does one distinguish between project management software and project and process management software?</o>

For most companies, managing projects really means managing the everyday processes that are routine and well-understood within the corporate culture. Successfully following these processes daily often determines the number of sales generated and ensures results are delivered for customers. Bills are paid, paychecks are disbursed and leases are renewed in a unique manner from company to company. The more mature a business, the more standardized, documented and followed business processes become.

Unfortunately, the majority of project management software does not enforce core processes or give visibility to a process?s status. These key features ensure all processes will be followed, tracked, improved, and streamlined. The ultimate goal of project management in every organization is cutting costs through increased efficiency. Without the expanded functionality of project and process management software it can not be certain that processes will be properly administered.

With project and process management software each step of each process is tracked. Who is responsible for this step of the process? How long does it typically take to complete? Is the process being completed according to schedule? What steps came previously? What happens next? What if it is late? Who needs to be notified? Is approval from upper-management necessary to continue? Project and process management software quickly answers all of these questions; traditional project management software does not.</o>

In addition, with project and process management software the entire process is modeled and captured step-by-step. Once the processes are captured in the system, reports are easily generated to identify delays, bottlenecks, resource allocations and costs. Therefore, the processes are continuously improved and modified to adapt to the business?s changes. The processes become intellectual property, differentiating companies from the competition.

Managing processes like projects is a very powerful discipline. With the right software tools businesses are provided with the chance to obtain a level of efficiency that was previously unfeasible. With this new trend, some software companies are unworthily giving the title of project and process management software to traditional project management systems, regardless of the fact that these systems do not have the ability to effectively manage processes. </o>

The software developer currently leading the way in project and process management is Interneer, Inc. Interneer?s sole product, Intellect, is an enterprise platform for managing both projects and processes with workflows, colorful visual guides and an advanced user-configurable platform. With Interneer Intellect business professionals can be certain that that their projects and processes are being managed at the limit of today?s most advanced project management technology. No other system facilitates a higher level of efficiency.

Coghead, ZoHo Creator or Intellect for building custom business apps?

by msteffen In reply to Submissions from an emplo ...

Out of nowhere we are suddenly seeing a large number of web-based systems that allow that average person, with or without knowledge of programming, build custom business applications. The two systems getting the most attention among bloggers and the media seem to be ZoHo Creator and Coghead. I?m not trying to say that these systems do not deserve the attention they are receiving, but it does seem that most people do not realize that there has been a system on the market for over 5 years successfully doing the same thing ZoHo Creator and Coghead aim to do. However, since it has been developed for over half a decade it has a lot more to offer. This system is Interneer Intellect.

Intellect is a web-based, user-friendly system that allows the average person, with or without knowledge of computer programming, to easily build fully-functional and extremely useful business applications. Intellect automates the processes needed to deliver results with easy to understand visual guides and wizards. Since Intellectis fully configurable without coding, companies gain the flexibility to adapt to change, eliminating the need for costly software modifications in the future.

Intellect's Instant Application Framework makes it simple to quickly create dynamic forms, interactive tables, workflow diagrams and collaboration tools such as due date notifications and sign-off requests. As a result, the typical business user is empowered to configure the system whenever necessary, even if he or she has no knowledge of computer programming. If you can get by in Excel, you can build sophisticated applications with Intellect. Intellect allows for levels of flexibility and user-control not possible with hard-coded applications, at a fraction of the cost.

If you are considering using ZoHo Creator or Coghead to build custom applications for your business I would suggest also looking into Interneer Intellect. All three systems offer their own unique strong points? but Interneer Intellect by far has the longest list of functions and capabilities. This in itself is reason enough to register at Interneer?s site and view the product demo and/or white papers.

User-Designed Applications. An Evolution in the Business Software Industry.

by msteffen In reply to Submissions from an emplo ...

Over the past few years, businesses have clearly increased their expectations toward the software industry. According to a recent study by McKinsey & Company and the Sand Hill Group business professionals have come to expect the functionalities of software to fit their unique processes. This is a shift from the past, in which the consensus was that software was not adaptable, meaning the end user must adjust to a set of provided functionalities. Since all software was hard coded and finalized as one product to be used by a diverse multitude of people, it was not expected to fit the exact needs of any particular organization perfectly.</o>

The cost of developing software was also once too high for most companies to fathom designing custom applications. Lately, it has become a more realistic option. Research indicates companies have increased their spending on internal development projects relative to packaged purchases over the past five years. Businesses want more control over their applications, and are willing to spend a lot of money to get that control.

Nevertheless, custom-built applications still have their own set of limitations. Unlike off-the-shelf software it is not readily available. The design process typically takes months, and is then followed by a lengthy implementation process and about a year of working all the bugs out of the newly-developed system. This poses a problem for companies searching for a time-tested, reliable system or a system that can be available in a short time frame.</o>

After much trial and error in the software industry it is now apparent that what is really needed is a reliable, flexible, powerful and user-friendly platform for building custom business software. Business professionals demand functionalities that diverge from typical project management inquiries. They are presented with unique needs in the application process flow, user interface, forms, business rules, workflow and access control of the application. Often times, companies have a well-developed, proprietary business process, best practice or methodology providing a competitive edge, and seek to maintain and enhance it with custom business software.</o>

Business professionals must control their applications' capabilities, evolution and lifecycle. This cannot be achieved with custom software developed by outsourcing, or even an IT Department. There is an enormous loss of knowledge when it is communicated from a business-minded individual to a developer. Industry journals are full of horror stories of failed custom development projects. It is too common to hear of a solution delivered much later than promised, and systems that do not fit the business users' needs. It is difficult for technical-savvy software developers to truly understand the needs of a business mind.

Over half a decade ago work began on the first platform to allow business users to fully customize and build powerful, fully-functional business applications. Today, Interneer Intellect fills the business user's need for control. Its Instant Application Framework empowers the business user to generate applications instantly, without programming. Just as DELL pioneered PC sales by providing mass customization by the end user, Interneer, Inc. allows even those with the most basic technical skills to create custom, changeable business software solutions. Developers refer to the concept behind business software platforms such as Interneer Intellect as the "Holy Grail" of software development: placing the power of the developer in the fingertips of the business user. We are witnessing a true evolution in the business software industry.
