Subnets

By Tim Marshall - Houston ·
I have a Win2K domain with multiple subnets. Servers are on 192.168.5.x and clients are on 32.x, 33.x, 34.x so and so. My question is should I designate a machine on each subnet to be a backup browser or to maintain the server list. I ask because I am having intermittant browsing problems on some subnets. Thanks

Its a good idea. place a master browser on each subnet. When a domain spans more than one subnet, the master browser will do the following:

Maintain the browse list for the portion of the domain on its subnet.
Provide lists of backup browserson the local subnet of a TCP/IP-based network to computers running Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 95/98.

We had this problem on a 300 computer network and it seemed to clear up the problem.
If you have a large number of computers and servers on each subnet, you may want to consider sites and global catalog servers as well to speed up authentication processes.

hope it helps

I think you should designate a machine on each subnet to be a backup browser (the subnet master browser).and then you will have one domain master browser and 3 master browser one for each subnet.
in this way at each subnet the local master browserwil have the names of all local mechins and it will update the domain master browser
