Super Micro P6DGS

By A Tech ·
I'm using a Super Micro P6dgs motherboard. It currently has 256mb of ram. The board consist of 4 memory banks with 128mb in the first two slots.
I am upgrading to 1 gb of ram by using a 1 gb pc100 sdram module. When trying to install the new ram i get memory errors. I've tried to install the 1 gb module with the other two and still no luck. I've also flashed the bios from the orginal version of 2.2 to 3.1 and still getting the same error. The board is capable of holding 2gb of ram.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be the problem?

The board handling 2 gig applies to 512 meg chips not 1 gig chips 4X512=2gig, 4X1gig=4gig, the slots can't handle the chip.

Sorry

First, opatzg is correct, you are limited to 512MB SDRAM modules.

Second, many of the older SDRAM motherboards are VERY picky as to what RAM modules will function on them.
I would check with both Kingston and Crucial as to the specifics of what SDRAM modules they offer for your motherboard.

Finally, since this is a PII motherboard, what OS are you running?
If it is Windows 9X/Me, be aware that MANY users have had problems with more than 511MB of RAM installed.
Microsoft's offical work-around, is to either remove some RAM, or add a maxmem statement to system.ini to limit the used ram to 511MB.

I personally limit all of my 9X boxes to 384MB of RAM to avoid any issues with the 511MB wall.
