Superstitious techs

by networker4 . Updated 16 years, 7 months ago

I once administered a cluster of Unix System V machines that functioned as middleware in a data collection/T&A system. Whenever I encountered a problem and contacted the manufacturer the first question the would always ask is “When was the machine last rebooted?”. When told them it had been weeks or months since I rebooted they were aghast. I finally ran into a tech who refused to help until I rebooted my production machines. When I finally reached his supervisor and asked what all the fuss about rebooting was he said, “Well, it’s all a matter of superstition really.”

From that point on I ran those systems for years without ever rebooting. (Hey – this isn’t Windows!)
