Suse Linux 9.1 Pro Edition...new user

By webbasemail ·
Hello, I'm getting ready to purchase the above software and install it. I've been a windows user for the last 4 yrs. I use UNIX a little bit at work (US NAVY - CTM). What do I need to know before I load the OS? I'm kinda nervous because if something goes wrong where is the exact place to get help and or live chat? I'll be using it as a server for my home network with 2 other computers and linksys router. They both have Win XP SP1. Is there any good sites for assistance or books other than Linux for Dummies that will assist? How about a magazine with Linux tips that I can get monthly that has some good info? Thanks...www.zacherfamily.com

Oh, yeeea. You already have some good suggestions above. But there is also a nice magazine called Linux Format, which I think is British, but still readable. Just go to your local Borders/B&N/whatever and scan the PC section of the magazine rack. There are others of course. You can also buy Suse with a manual, possibly at the same bookstore, and finally during install there is an option to include man pages and documentation, at least when I've used Mandrake and Red Hat. Bottom line: don't worry about it. All the info is very available, just a bit more scattered than in the case of Microsoft which has one main web page. After you get used to the different organization of the sources, it's very easy to use.

Hello,
I just installed SuSe Linux 9.3 that i downloaded from the Novell website yesterday. I loaded it on aspare box i had with Athlon 1800,256Mb DDR RAM,10G
HDD. It took about 1H15Min to load all the default applications and the OS. Everything worked first time. This is my first go it Linux, and i must say iam very impressed with it. I connected it to my home network(DHCP enabled) and i was browsing the web without any problems. I learned a lot in about
2.5 Hours. I ahve played a cd, a VCD using Kaffeine. I have also downloaded the desktop user guide and Administration giude from Novell.

Too many people dismiss Linux because they are not familiar with it.I am qualified on Windows XP, and i think this is a real alternative to windows.
The KDE desktop (installed by default) is very much like a MAC desktop.

Down load it and give it a try. You won't be dispointed.
Kind regards,
Balbir
