Suse Linux 9.2 network printng via Samba

By k.somma ·
Help!I have a set up a home network. XP connected to the internet, and main print station. I have several laptops, some with XP and one with Suse Linux 9.2... I have tried everything to get this Suse linux machine to print off the network. The issues range from an error message that I receive (NY_Access_Denied) to what appears to be successful (BUT no output at printer). Also notice ... can never find exactly the right driver for my Lexmark 4200 series multi function printer. I really like linux .... but not be able to print is very frustrtaing. Oh by the way, the XP machine connect print with ease. Any suggestions? Thanks

So just to be clear, it sounds like the printer is attached to a windows machine? Can you access any file shares on your windows machine from linux?

Have you checked to make sure you have your windows printer share permissions set correctly? That would account for the NY_Access_Denied error message.

If you can't find the correct driver for your linux machine, my guess would be this is where the root of the no output problem lies.

Finally, read through this link:

edit your smb.conf with:

printing = linux
printcap name = /etc/printcap
load printers = yes
log file = /var/log/samba-log.%m
lock directory = /var/lock/samba

comment = My Printer
security = server
path = /var/spool/lpd/lp
browseable = no
printable = yes
public = yes
writable = no
create mode = 0755

security = server
path = /var/spool/lpd/lp
printer name = lp
writable = yes
public = yes
printable = yes
'Or you can hard code the printer name
print command = lpr -r -h -P %p %s
