I’m managing a mixed mode Active Directory domain. All machines hit one of two Win2k3 WSUS servers and all updates except IE7 have been approved. Nearly all workstations are running Windows XP.
My Problem: SVCHost.exe is using a ton of RAM. I just rebooted a bit ago because on my computer it was up to 280MB, though I have seen it higher.
while I It will slowly climb higher and higher the longer my computer remains turned on. After searching around it seems I’m not the only person with this issue, but finding a solution has been difficult. The only “fix” I’ve run accross that seems to work is turning off WSUS. Thats not really an option here, as I would like to keep our machines updated, and manual installs of course would be too time consuming.
Also, I have 1GB of physical RAM and my page file has been up to 2GB, and then after I close all apps I’m still using over my physical amount.
I’m not sure how Windows manages physical and paged memory, but it seems the more RAM I have the more it wastes. Users are screaming at me about slow computers and I dont know how to nail down why the page files are growing so large. I’m suspecting this is in line with the SVCHost issue, but I cant really be sure.
Does anybody have more information I may not be aware of, or have some ideas to try/check?
Maybe I should just drop some thermite on top of each workstation… that will resolve the paging issues.
