SVCHOST.EXE — HUGE CPU USEAGE??

I have a 1.4mhz AMD processor computer with 1gig of memory. Without fail, the process running svchost.exe, which there are numerous ones, will suddenly and randomly start taking up 100% of the CPU useage and slow the computer to a near stop with anything else running. This will last for a good 3-4 minutes. It’s driving me insane!! I’ve never used a computer that does this. Can someone PLEASE help me fix this.
