svchost.exe is missing

I have a user that thought he had gotten the blaster worm but research indicates the machine is clean. However, he is now recieving an error message “scvhost.exe is missing”. He cannot run any software install programs as windows installer will not start up and also has no access to the internet anymore.
Any thoughts?
Machine is W2K SP2
