what is the difference b/w hub & switch, also please tell me what is the meaning of the port on hub/switch which is labeled with "x" and without "x"?

A hub is 1 connection with all the bandwidth shared...

A switch is 1 connection sending out an equal amount of bandwidth to all ports.

The X is most likely for a crossover cable. In which case, mose switches these days auto detect a crossover cable, but some do not. you would have to look up the model # online or in the manual to find out the fulls specs of its capabilities.

I'll try to make this as simple as possible. A hub takes a signal from one wire, and then passes that signal on to every other wire connected to it. The signal is encoded so that only the machine for which the signal was intended "listens". The rest of the machines connected to the hub "ignore" the signal, as it is not addressed to them. This works fine on low traffic networks, but as traffic increases through the hub network performance will decline. I have heard it put as an analogy of a room full of people. Two or three people can talk OK, but when 200 people are trying to talk at once, it gets a little harder to hear.

A switch, on the other hand, works much the same as a hub, but it uses the MAC address of the network card to send the data to JUST the intended recipient. This reduces network congestion by creating a virtual connection, like a cable running just from the sender to the receiver.

I'm not sure what the "x" means on your particular hub or switch, but if its only by one port on the hub/switch, I would guess its an uplink port. This port has a crossover built-in so you can link multiple hubs/switches like one unit. You connect a regular patch cable from the uplink on one to a regular port on another hub or switch so that all machines can talk to each other. Without this uplink port, you would have to use a crossover cable (where the transmit and receive wires are switched).
