Switch Not Working

By gonzalo.raffo ·
I have an adsl connection and a 10/100 mbps router.Recently i bought an 10/100 8 port.I connected the router to the switch so i would be able to use my broadband connection with my home network connected to a switch but its not working. Is it the wiring?? or the swith configuration?

do you have a link light on wire going to modem/router? yes=wiring probably ok.
did you turn off dhcp on the new switch? did you assign an appropriate ip address tot the new switch. are all the computers on your home network not talking on the network now or just the switch? let us know what more help you might need...let us know what version of windows...

If the link lights are on give each item an ip address like 192.168.0.1 Router
192.168.0.10 Pc
192.168.0.20 PC2

All should have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

make the default gateway of the PCs 192.168.0.1

Once this is done, reboot and open a command prompt and type

ping 192.168.0.1 from the PCs, you should get a reply. Also check the PCs can ping each other. This should narrow down the fault to the switch or the router config.

If you dont get link lights, try changing the cables, you may have crossovers from the previous configuration. Make sure the wires are the same order on both ends of the network cable.
