switching a slave drive to a master.

How can you replace the master drive with a slave drive without losing data on the slave drive. All information needed from the master drive has been copied to the slave drive. Master drive size = 3gb, Slave drive size = 15gb. Running windows 98 1stedition.

    Thanks,

I’m assuming you used an product like Ghost to mirror the master to the slave.

You have to check & change, as appropriate, the shunts on the slave drive so it acts as master; remove the master drive and place the new master on the same cable terminator (I’m also assuming IDE).

      Then boot your system.

Otherwise, you’re going to need to boot from a floppy with DOS utilities and make the partition on the old slave/new master bootable.

Don’t forget to update your BIOS information if it does not auto update.

If you are referring to changing the C: drive to the D: drive and vice versa. First make sure the slave drive is bootable (sys d:)At the back of each hard drive is a small plastic jumper connecting 2 pins. There are 6 pins in all, two rows of 3 (some older hd has a number jumper instead, if the configuration is different check info that came with hd or go to support page of manufacture web page). Above or below the pins u will see Cs Sl Ma (cable, slave or master) put the plastic jumper across the 2 pins marked MA for the C: drive and SL for the D: drive. Don’t use Cs. Restart computer the c is now d and the d is c no loss of data.
