Switching server / w2k

By Lino767 ·
I am switching a server from w2k (older box) to a bigger and better box(w2k new box). I want to make the new box as an addtional domain controller to the current w2k domain controller (older box)and pull the older box offline. Does this method make the data, user and security information to transfer to the new box OR do I have to use active directory connector? What is the simple way to switch server without damaging any data?

Thank you for your help.

Once you have created the additional DC (by running dcpromo), give the 2 DCs time to replicate AD completely.

Then you must transfer all the FSMO roles from the old Master DC to the new DC (Go to Active Directory Users and Computers; Right click<yourdomain.com> and choose "Operations Masters"). You must move all FSMO roles (three if your domain is a child domain in a larger AD forest; five if your DC is the root of your own AD forest) before pulling the old DC offline. You do not need touse the ADC.

This operation will complete the transfer of all AD-related data. Any other data (user's files, shares, shared printers, etc.) must be moved manually.

Hope this helps.
