Packet switching (as opposed to circuit switching) is the technology of breaking up a large message into bite-size pieces. Each piece is then marked with the destination address and sent out over a network. The individual packets travel over a network using many different paths, but all arrive at the correct final destination where they are put back together into the original message and delivered to the receiving party.
Using packets instead of sending large messages through "Circuit Switching" frees up a network to handle much more traffic. Hope this was helpful.
