Symantec AV Corporate on Linux

By Macgyver.Hicks ·
I'm wanting to set up a Linux file server and AV server. I have to use Symantec AV Corporate 9 or compatible as the AV Update Server since all of my Windows systems have the client version on them. I'm trying this with Xandros Linux and have gotten it to set up the AV software, but it does not allow it to configure for server. My best guess is that since Code Weavers CrossOver Office emulates as Win98/ME, Symantec will configure only as a client. I want to stay away from installing VMWare or similar and running 2 OS's simultaneously. Is there an NT emulator for Linux? Or, does anyone know a work-around to get SAV 9 to run as a server on Win98/ME (since that is CrossOver's and Wine's emulation standard)?

your best bet is crossover office.
it will even run m$ office xp under linux.
using Xandros, it should be there.
wine should be un-installed to make sure no conflicts.

w.i.n.e. = Wine Is Not an Emulator
it is an interpreter from windows to linux for system calls.

I took WINE out of Xandros 3.0 Deluxe and tried installing Symantec AV again. It still would only install as a client. It would not give me the Server option during the install as it does in an NT OS.

More Info: I've tried running the install with Codeweavers Crossover in "Unsupported Software" mode and it errors out before it even starts to install. In the "unsupported software" mode one can choose which Windows to emulate up to XP. But, that doesn't help me any as it won't even start to install.

just talked to my neighbor who knows Xandros better than I do.
his recommendation, use a true linux based av program, using symantec's for windows is an incredible amount of work, with only partial functionality. ( it's way slower so will slow your network down huge )

I'll get a copy of Xandros from my neighbor and see if I can get crosover office to run SAV9 as server on it.
