symbolic link

Window NT 4.0 SP4 on Laptop
Mouse is causing system to lock up and freeze.

Event Viewer states,
Unable to create the symbolic link for COM1

checked MS KB article Q254019
it says to open control pannel->ports->COM1->settings->advanced… theproblem is that I don’t have the option to select advanced. (greyed out)

any ideas…
