Sysprep and Computer Names

By dzwinck ·
My network is set up with workstations having the naming convention of the letter "w" plus the last six characters of the MAC address of the integrated NIC.

I want to be able to AUTOMATICALLY have sysprep name the computer following this naming convention. I do not use RIS yet although from an article on this site I see you can program a policy for the RIS server to do this. I am looking for a native sysprep method of accomplishing the same task.

It would be real nice to not allow "human error" in naming the workstations and automatically have sysprep do this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

SysPrep is a dumb tool, not meant to have the intelligence you want. However it IS meant to be fed from responsefiles containing all of the answers - e.g. the machine name.
So your challenge is: pick the right scripting environment, available at the moment that you tune the image after deploying the PC and before the reboot which launches sysprep, which can
- Obtain the Mac address
- Put it in the responsefile
You do not supply information on your imaging style and process. If it runs partly under Windows, KIXTART might be a perfect scripting environment. Otherwise maybe DOS batch plus an util (freeware?) obtaining that Mac and putting it into an environment variable...
