Do you suppose that the score ultimately will be settled with spammers, their cries lost during initial confusion, pandemonium, and death?

We are just the bit players here at TR now the spammers are the main posters.

Is that counting my posts with theirs, or without

If I am on their side, they win hands down.
If I am on our side, we tie.

Why doesn't...

by magic8ball In reply to System Collapse

TR have new users either moderated before allowing a post or requiring a minimum number of posts before links can be inserted? 25 or 50 would be sufficient to eliminate the spammers just looking for a quick link.

I don't think there are such spammers...

by AnsuGisalas In reply to Why doesn't...

and even if there are, I've noticed that some of these bots (for they are bots), first post 50 posts without the link, then edit in the link later, trying to fool back-end systems.
No, I think the only thing that could work would be the have moderators be able to kill all posts of a poster (and engage an 1-hour IP ban for that IP), from a single mod-only button on the spammer's profile.

1 hour IP ban

by magic8ball In reply to I don't think there are s ...

2 weeks would be better. I agree that the moderators should be able to kill all the posts that a spamer make.

Other than having the moderators approve each post there may be no way to get rid of the spam entirely. Post by post approval would be way too time consuming.

Attention span is key

by AnsuGisalas In reply to 1 hour IP ban

Problem with an IP ban is that it can hurt innocents, and can be circumvented easily.
So a very short ban can make sense, as an inconvenience - a signal to go seek lower hanging fruit, but a long ban doesn't make any sense.

2 weeks pointless

by CharlieSpencer In reply to 1 hour IP ban

These guys change IPs much more frequently than that. Daily, at least.

I think an hour could be good.

by AnsuGisalas In reply to 2 weeks pointless

Just enough to potentially be a nuisance, after all, there are other places they can bog up.
If they have to go out of their way even a little, they might forgo it completely.

There has to be a way to get rid of the spammers

by magic8ball In reply to 2 weeks pointless

That's why I hardly come here anymore. 2 weeks might be excessive you're right, reset your modem and you have a new ip. There are other countless ways around ip bans. I don't know the solution to getting rid of these types. Hopefully TR can come up with something. It's been a problem forever but even more so recently. Maybe a captcha on each post? But even those have their limitations and ways to bypass.

Better automated spam recognition.

by seanferd In reply to There has to be a way to ...

Say, at least as good as the crappiest email filter, would be a start.

Actually deleting reported spam within, say, a month, would be another plus.
