system doesn't make it through reboot when restarting sometimes

i was wondering if someone can help me with my problem. My computer is a dinosaur of sorts because i'm still running windows xp home edition. Anyway i installed a dvd drive because my cd burner died. since then on occasion when i restart my computer, it doesn't make it through the start test. i get a really loud beep that continues until i unplug the computer and starts it back up

How long has this system been up and running without a 'redo'?

My experience with Windows in any version informs me that a fresh, clean install periodically is required for some bizarre and twisted reason that only MS knows.

Timespan is relative to how heavily you use your machine. I wipe and redo each of mine approximately every 2.5 to 3 years. I am probably not what one would consider a heavy user.
