System files outdated - Windows 98

By wakim ·
I have downloaded a free Chinese dictionary, when I unzipped the file and to begin the Setup,it runs the installation up to a certain file and stop.A message said that the system files are outdated and needs to update, press OK. to update. When I updated the file(Windows update automatically after you reboot the computer),and start the Setup again the same message appears again. What and where have I gone wrong? Help needed.

System files outdated - Windows 98

I suspect that the software requires a newer version of Windows to operate.
Either Me, W2K, or XP

If the dictonary is supopossed to run on 98, then try adifferent download. Or, if you have 98, perhaps you need 98SE.

Can you provide a link to the website where you got the dictonary from?

If I can download the file, and see what errors I get, I may be able to help you overcome them.

Looking at the web site for the dictonary, it looks like you need to download 3 additional files to make the dictonary work.
1 of 2 fonts and a bugfix.
I suggest that you download and install the font and bugfix before attempting to install the dictonary again.

It will take me a while to download the files myself as I have only dial-up and 1 phone line.

Chas

From the web site;

To make the dictionary work you need a Chinese font. If you do not have any you can download any of thosetwo fonts:

- Arial unicode font. Very good font with both Chinese and Japanese characters. Self installing, nice looking!
Download (13.7 Mb)

- MSSONG Is often installed if you have Chinese IME etc.
Download(2.5 Mb)

To install this font: Download the font. Go to the "Control Panel" and choose "fonts". Choose to install new fonts from the menu.

Note! We are still using a Microsoft OCX file called Forms2.0 This file is used to display Chinese characters. Unfortunately there is alsoa bug in this file. Some machines will give you an error message. If you have this error, download this bug fix and install it, after you have installed the dictionary! This will correct the error. Bugfix

Guess what!
The software installed with no errors on my system.

Here is what I think is going on.
The system software that is installed is Microsoft Data Access.
I allready had DAO 3.5 installed on my system. And, when I installed it, I had to install it twice to get it to work.

Here is a link to a Microsoft download that I "think" is what you need.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=30201&area=search&ordinal=1

Remove any spaces from the pasted link.

I say that I think this is what you need, as it does not have the same name or revision, but the description looks to be correct.

I had to install DAO when I tried the "Bugnosis" web bug detector.
When the install faild, they redirected me to a siteto install DAO from.

Best Wishes, Chas

Found an alternate site that claims to have just the DAO files.

Hi,

I have looked intot he Data Access issue further.

The small download is just one of the DLL files needed for data access to function.
(To install DLL files, you can usually just copy them to either the folder that the program that needs it is installed in, or place it in the windows\system folder.)

Use this link to get the Microsoft Data Access Run Time updates.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33503&area=search&ordinal=3

If you have any problems fromthere, go to www.microsoft.com/data

What you want is the run time modules for data access.
