Locked

system freeze (Athlon T-bird)

By rhino217 ·
My pc will freeze when it sits at the desktop, sometimes in minutes or up to hours. It will also freeze when I copy cd to cd. I have swapped ram, hard drives and all other components. I am running an AMD 950 t-bird w/ 512 mb ram, 64 mb geforce 2 gts, 300 watt ps, the motherboard was bundled w/ the processor and a fan. I have played with every bios setting imaginable (at least the ones i understand). My system is running 1.70 volts, system temp is 70f and cpu temp will run about 98-108. My only other theory is my motherboard is failing or it is overheating. Any suggestions. Thank You.

here's a couple of ideas/suggestions.
first of all, disable any power-saving options in the bios and the screen-saver.
second, make sure that your cd-rom and your cd-writer are on different cables. usually the arrangement should be cd-writer on secondary master and cd-rom/dvd on the primary slave.
third, if you have any old non-acpi-compliant cards in your machine (maybe a modem, sound card, etc.), that will cause it to lock up because your power-management system will try to power down thecard or wake it up and it won't respond, so you get a lock-up.
last, try removing one card at a time to see if you can narrow the possibilities-list, start with the oldest first.
hope that helps.

I've seen this problem occur with a few motherboard types.. if you go to the motherboard manufacturer they might have a problem identified while mixing with certain componants?

In my case I had to upgrade the bios on my motherboard before it stopped behaving badly.

BTW this is extremely dangerous if you haven't done it before. Make sure you are absolutely sure it can't be anything else and always follow the manufacturers instructions precisely.

hope this helps,

jb

check your fan cooler, it?s very probable that this don?t work properly. When the prosesor overheating it?s freeze the machine, try to use the machine without cover, and look what happend.
