System freezes when mup.sys loads

My workstation has WinXp and Win2k. It freezes up after loading mup.sys. I can’t boot into safe mode, last know good config, or normal in either OS. I saw some other discussions in the Tech Q&A but they refered to software that was just installedand the final solution was to reload the OS. Neither of those are good options for me. I haven’t installed any new software and would rather not reload the OS. Can I fix this from the recovery console or the command prompt?
