    System not recognising Network adapters

    Locked

    by jdclyde ·

Working on an “e-machine” running Windows XP with SP2 installed. The system is a T2642.

The system does not recognise the network adapter. In the Device Manager it shows up as “Unknown” at the type of device and Realtech rtl8139/810x Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC with the yellow exclamation.

I loaded a current Antivirus (symantec corporate vr 10) and found many viruses and malware.

Removed the NIC and rebooted, finds the device, wants to reboot and then goes to the same thing.

It has an on-board NIC, but I have also tried two other Nic’s and get the exact same result.

I have also used different PCI slots as well.

    same results.

Is this going to take a reinstall of XP? Will it let me “upgrade” or “repair” without losing current content? Not my system of I would have just done a clean wipe.

    Thanks!

jd, this is most likely overly simplistic but have you tried to just load the driver from disk? I’ve seen this occur with 2003 on a fresh load. No driver was present with the load and therefor no card. If you found a buttload of malware then it is a possibility that you have a corrupted driver as well.

      Hope it helps.

I have downloaded the latest drivers for chipset,LAN,Video and updated them all.

        Still no deals.

Tried to remove the drivers, reboot, and reinstall but that did not have any effect either.

As stated, this is on-board so it can’t be physically removed.

I have even tried again to add a NIC to the system, but it still shows “unknown” as they type of device and realtech for both devices.

yeah I’m with IPpirate. uninstall the NIC, power down. take it out, reboot without it in there. power down, put it back in, boot up and let windows find it.

You can get the latest Realtek drivers and stick em on a CD and in device manager, update the drivers manuall.

I’ve had some problems with Realtek NICs and found that I had to specify the driver to install. I think driver signing in XP interfers with Realtek unsigned drivers [like using a w2k driver in XP where the w2k driver isn’t signed]

This may be a fairly simple fix. I’ve run across this a few times. It won’t hurt to try. Google “winsock fix”. Find and download the small utillity, run it, reboot and you should be good to go.

Ran the winsock.fix and the on-board NIC came alive.

The device is still listed as unknown but it works.

“good enough” is sometimes good enough as this is a free bee job.

        Thanks.

Have you tried System Restore. See if you can restore to sometime before viruses/malware. Then I’d try the winsock fix, then run sfc /scannow. If it still doesn’t work do a repair install.

Ran winsock.fix and it fixed the winsock.

still registers the device as unknown, but it works.

Good enough for a free bee job.

      Thanks everyone for the help.
