System resources go down

By peterbakker ·
Windows 98SE
Soltek SL-75MA mother board
184MB RAM
15GB free hard drive on the C: drive.

Playing games going into one game and then closing each game and opening another the system resources free go down and down until the computer stops working and has to be restarted.

It seems the memory is not being released.

Thankyou
Regards Peter

Defragment regularly, if you haven't.

Try installing a program like Rambooster (it's free, others/possibly better ones exist, but I've had good results with this one). You can find it at http://www.sci.fi/~borg/rambooster/

The best thing you can do is to get more RAM. Don't put in more than 512 MB on a 98 system though, or it will cause more problems.

Good luck!

I have had the exact same problem on a W98 box.

Both DirectX 9 and IE 6 can cause W98 to develop major memory leaks.

A memory utility can help temporarily.
The answer is to either install a new video driver that fully supports DirectX 9, or to drop back to IE 5.5SP2 and DirectX 7 or 8 (depending on which version is supported by your video driver.

You can get IE 5.5 from the browser archive at www.evolt.org

You can get DirectX removal utilities from www.voodoofiles.com

I corrected my problem by formatting the hard drive and starting over.

You actually will see a noticeable performance improvement by starting over from scratch.
Unless you change NO hardware, and install very little software, a Windows installation has a working life of around 2 years.
After that, the registry grows too large and takes up too many resources.

It's not going to be possible to answer this question or find a resolution to this problem without know more information, What kind of video card?... Does it have Shared memory? ...that's just on the video card side, on the windows side,
how do you have 184MB of memory... that is not possible... If you have 2 sticks of 128, then you have 256MB, If you have 1 stick of 128 and a 64 stick, then you have 192MB, and if you have 1 stick of 128 and a 32MB for some reason.... then that comes to 160, so I think that your reporting your memory incorrectly or at least your computer is....The question would be how much physical memory do you have in the computer... and depending on that you need to have your virtual memory set correctly... the Virtual Memory has to be set to twice the physical memory or your may experience some resource issues.....Although these other answers could be causing the problem, without more information, they are just guessing

Upgrade to Windows 2000. Windows 98 is really bad in managing resources.
