System Restore Locks up - XP Home Edition

By TheNose ·
Right Clicking on "My Computer" and then clicking on the system restore tab brings up this error and problem.

Run DLL as an App Error

AppName: rundll32.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 ModName: srrstr.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 000099b2

Now the only thing(s) that I can think of that are causing this problem is that I have:

Upgraded the hard drive
Installed Diskeeper Home Edition. (
Installed Spy-bot S&amp
Some time ago I installed PC Tools Registry Mechanic, and I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it. I suspect Diskeeper, as I was able to look at a log, and the problem showed up about the time that I installed the home edition. I had used the professional trial version... I've searched their site, but not found any answers in their FAQ's.

Anyone out there have some ideas? Favorite tools to keep windows healthy?

Reinstall System Restore

by bcpgm In reply to System Restore Locks up - ...

You may try reinstalling System Restore.
Navigate to C:\Windows\INF. Right click on sr.inf and install. INF is a hidden folder. You have to provide XP CD unless you already have I386 folder and files.

Thanks - You're a god.

That did the trick. I did a search for the file(s). Both were on the system, one was in the SR2 update dir. And another an mmf file, I think, was in the system32 dir. But I re-installed it, and it looks like it's working again.

I'm still trying to figure out what munged it.

I just found MS backup also, so I'm going to use it to back things up.
