System Restore over PXE with a budget of nothing.

by the altruist . Updated 17 years ago

A friend asked me to reinstall his Windows XP on his tablet PC.
The Tablet:
Laptop IDE HD (Ouch)
NO CDROM (Ouch)
Ethernet Port (Yay!)
512MB RAM (Ouch)

Laptop IDE HD adapter: in different state with my sister.
Current monetary resources: $0
I do not own Ghost 8.2. (ARRRGGHH!!!)

The game plan in my mind is this:
1. Create a Virtual Machine on Workstation/Server
2. Install Windows XP on VM.
3. Sysprep VM. Add in drivers, etc.
4. Clone VM’s HD to compressed HD Image.
5. Create bootable PXE OS-image with cloning software.
6. Serve PXE OS with TFTPD32.
7. Clone drive.
8. Reboot Tablet into WinXP setup
9. ???
10. Profit!!!

Step 5 is the one I’m having trouble with. Any suggestions?

I’m wondering about Clone-zilla or one of the other GPL options, but I need to do some homework.
WINNER might work, but I need to do some research on how much memory it needs the client to have. (Also, the D/L link for XP embedded was down for a while so I gave up on that temporarily.)
