    System seems dead

    Locked

    by rocquee ·

Hi, just installed AOL5 on a P266. First used the CD on the Win98 disk to install AOL4 then upgrade to AOL5. Upon reboot.. well there was none. There is no cmos screen, no post codes, and the monitor light fails to turn green to indicated there is communications. I tried replacing the HD, switching both memory mods out and resetting the cmos battery to attempt to reset the settings reinstall video drivers so i could SEE anything. M598 MB. Cannot find where to disable the on board video so I cantry a spare video card. If this is not the place for this question.. my apologies. Thx KRoss

AT first reading, I would say that AOL blew up your computer, but hey, even tho it’s bad, it’s not that BAD…. probably coincidental.

You say completely dead? When you punch the power button, do you get even a momentary reaction…. kinda a whir, then shutdown, or absolutely no reaction?

The manual for the motherboard is here

      http://www.pcchips.com.tw/M598.html

If there is absolutely no reaction, I would suspect the power source, so check your outlet with a working appliance. Bypass your surge suppressor if you have one.

If your power supply has a fuse, unplug the thing, and check the fuse. ( only if they are checkable externally ) don’t disassemble to do this unless you’re really brave.

Of course, check the power switch on the back of the CPU.

If you’re getting a momentary reaction, then hard shutdown, it’s what’s called a dead short. One or more of your cards or drives are not completely seated. Pull the cards, and make sure they are firmly seated in the slots. Double check the power plugs to the drives.

      Hope this helps.

        Hello,

Punching the pwr button turns on the fan, kb, cd, and hd. There is the ‘sound’ of pwr being on. No video. I dloaded the manual and I must be blind as I do not see a jumper to diasble the on board video.

I checked the ac outlet in thewall its good. I checked the pwr supply and it reads good as well. (could not find a fuse on supply)

All cards are seated and memory has been pulled with known good memory replacing it.

I do not hear any of the usual POST beeps nor beeps to indicate an error.

        Thank you for you time.

i had to fix a system just like this a few weeks agao. Try to use the on board video. you might have to plug in the cable to the onboard video header on the main board. on that board the on-board video MUST be disabled in the bios. By reseding the bios it defaults to the onboard setting. Once you plug the monitor on to the onboard video you should get a screen. go to the cmos setup and set the primary video disply to PCI and save changes. shut down the computer and plug in your PCI card and plug in your monitor to the PCI card. That should fix this. let me know if this works. contact me at http://www.nbicomputers.com

I cannot get to the BIOS, therefore cannot ‘see’ the BIOS defaults. Perhaps I did not understand your answer clearly??

Probably a stupid question, but you didn’t say whether or not you had tried a diferent monitor? Maybe it’s not your PC

I closed this question because I realized what I did (didnt do). When I thought I was switching memory into diff. slots, I really uninstalled/reinstalled same mem in same slots (dummy me). The machines owner was asking questions last night as to whyone mem stick sat higher than the other all the time. Thats when I snapped.

To make things worse I had taked both to a local shop to be placed on the SIMM checker. Apparently There is a more rigerous (sp) test availible for mem purchased from the shop. They only did a quick scan, the free one. I really needed the full test, the $$ one.

Next time I will know better. Thanks to all that tried to help as I did learn a few tricks for later down the line. Enjoy Life!
