System Slowdown, etc.

By matt ·
Hello,

We are running a small, p2p network. Our XP machine has slowed down terribly, and there are other conditions:
- Server busy (several times a day)
- Programs sometime startup as a process, but not as an application. They reside in the background, but can't be run.
- Can't start Word; other office apps work, but sometimes abort.

I have done the following:
1. Visus scan (now clean, was hit with sircam)
2. Ran ad-away (spyware removal)
3. Norton Utilities: disk and windows checking
4. Scandisk
5. I ran a few diagnostic programs, but I don't know enough to interpret them. Are there any that actually try to diagnose what's wrong (as opposed to giving test results)?

This has been a smooth running system for almost a year, and it went south. Any ideas? Thanks.

Matthew

Have you?

First have you looked at your antivirus software site for info on sircam.
This links to Symantec's site assuming you have Norton AV.

Did you run the sircam removal tool? See the section on "damage" that it may cause.

Not having used Norton utils I have to ask after reading all that you listed.
Did you perform a "disk cleanup" from system tools? Next I'd ask if you have defragged the HDD?

Check the performance tab in task manager, check processes for what is eating CPU time and replace or kill the offending process.
