system standby failed

Power Managment on WIN2000PRO laptop
When I attempt to put laptop into standby mode I get an error saying:
"System standby failed The device driver for the 'PS/2 Compatible Mouse' device is preventing the machine from entering standby, Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver"

Drivers are up to date. All WIN2000PRo critcal updates and SP2 installed

This laptop has been running for months w/o problem. Haven't changed anything recently.

Went into Device Manager and removed driver and reinstalled. Originally had an ALPs pointing device, removed that and went with the recommended driver upon reinstall. Dual OPSYS on this laptop and standby works with WIN98SE so it'snot a hardware problem.

Is this a registry problem? I got a reccomend to reinstall windows, but there has to be an easier way..

system standby failed

You're probably not going to believe me, but here goes. I had a very similar problem with my home system, where it wouldn't recognize anything to bring it out of standby mode. The ONLY solution I found is to change you screensaver to ANYTHING else(I used Microsoft's default...yukk). I had installed a Lord of the Rings theme about 2 months ago, and it worked fine until last week. Hope this helps!!!
