System won't reboot after using Malwarebytes AntiMalware

By muhsayy ·
I need help recovering the operating system on a dell running xp. I removed an infection by Personal Security malware using MBAM. On reboot, the computer shuts down. Can't operate on safe mode either. How do I recover the operating system? I don't want to delete my files.

You'll need to boot from OS CD or recovery partition

First, it reboots because "reboot on system failure" is engaged (by default, I believe) which ensures that you don't see the BSOD which will hint to you what the problem is.

Since it is due to malware removal, you need to fix Winlogon in the registry, pointing it to the proper file, not the one the malware installed.

(That covers two stupid features of Windows, and even MBAM does not account for the second one.)

You'll need to get in, as I said, with a recovery partition or CD.
will also work, if you can get the CD burned on another system.

malwarebytes antimalware has removed the necessary operating system files

your Anti-Virus probably kicked in after the main infection was removed but then didn't have a clear picture of what was going on and I'm guessing removed a required OS file.

Best thing to do is post in the HJT forum and someone will assist you in getting the system repaired. Do you have access to the original Windows install CD ?
