System32.exe missing error message

Every time I log on to my computer, running windows xp, i get an error saying that C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe is missing. my computer doesn’t properly go into standby when I close the lid. I assume it has to do with this message. Is there a way to fix my problems or get System32.exe back?
