system.alt ???

I `ve seen a system that couldn`t boot up and while it boot up in safe mode it freezing when tring to read system.alt .in normal system the size of file is near 3MB but I check it in this system and see that the size of file is about 60MB .What could be the problem with it ?the system was shutdown normally at last shutdown .
